The University Graduate School Doctoral Researcher Elite Scholarships are Scholarships for overseas doctoral researchers registered on a PhD programme at the University of Birmingham. These Scholarships are available to academically elite overseas candidates from the Colleges of Arts and Law, Medical and Dental Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Physical Sciences and Social Sciences. There are ten University Graduate School Doctoral Researcher Elite Scholarships available annually, for study starting at the beginning of each academic year, these are intended to attract and support outstanding overseas candidates to doctoral research at the University of Birmingham.
A successful applicant will hold an offer of a place to study a PhD at the University of Birmingham, starting in October 2012. They will typically be top of their cohort of undergraduate students. If they are at a leading institution within their country, this requirement can sometimes be relaxed to within the top 5% to 10% of their cohort. The applicant?s profile of marks will be exemplary (equivalent to high first class with no marks in the IIi equivalent category or below). The quality of the institution should be judged by world university rankings. Applicants could already have research published in international journals as a result of Masters level research for instance. Their references will attest to qualities of academic achievement or research potential that make the candidate stand out above their peers. They may have won prizes within their institution, or even international prizes. The Scholarship is conditional on nominated candidates achieving a first class mark (or equivalent) in their final examinations before beginning their PhD at the University of Birmingham.
