This studentship will focus on research into the progressive collapse of naval vessels built from both steel and aluminium. It will investigate damage mechanisms and post-damage progressive collapse of these vessels to assist in the development of simplified methodologies for assessing damage strength. The project will provide much-needed understanding and methodologies for the structural performance of naval vessels after suffering significant levels of damage. Structural analysis methodologies at both the component level and the global level will be compared with available experimental data and then referenced to nonlinear finite element analysis for comparative purposes. The damage strength of naval vessel hull girders due to collision and grounding scenarios will be considered and used to assess the structural integrity of the damaged vessel to assist in recoverability process. The energy absorption characteristics of typical monohull and multi-hull warship structures will be investigated. The strength and damaged strength of structural units will be investigated using the Nonlinear Finite Element Method, hull girder strength will be investigated using both Nonlinear Finite Element Methods and Simplified 2D and 3D Methodologies.

A full award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate and an annual stipend of £14,000 per year. Person Specification Candidates should possess at least an upper second class honours degree in a relevant numerate discipline: • Marine Technology (Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering) • Mathematics or Physics • Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineering Candidates should also be EU citizens
